Apple Music Lossless and Dolby Atmos

Well, I haven’t been writing for a while since I have been very busy with both work and studies. But I thought I will write about the new “lossless” music service being offered to all customers by Apple Music.

Apple Music offers up to 24 bit/48kHz lossless audio and up to 24 bit/192kHz Hi Res Lossless audio*

Apple now gives you the option to use lossless audio formats for cellular, wifi and downloads. You will however need a wired headphone or speakers at a minimum for the lossless audio stream and an external digital to analog converter for the Hi Res lossless audio. Not having an external converter, I tried the mid tier lossless option using Apple’s Lightning to 3.5mm cable and a wired headphone. While the audio quality was fantastic, to be honest, I didn’t perceive too much of a difference on most of the tracks I played compared to the standard AAC format at 256kbps which Apple has been offering all along.

Another feature Apple Music now offers is the “Spatial Audio” tracks using Dolby Atmos. This is available on any headphone but will play by default on select Apple headphones and earbuds.

Many tracks are now available with Dolby Atmos’ Spatial Audio

The Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio feature really livens up the music and it is touted as a step above stereo, which is likely true. Voices and instruments can be heard from what appears to be a 360 degree sound stage. This works well for some tracks, I’m not so sure it works for all of them though, especially remastered older songs. But each to their own.

Have you tried the new lossless audio and spatial audio from Apple Music? What do you think? Leave a comment below.
